The types of players you're likely to run into in online poker. What do you know about it?
| |
I'm going to start from the idea that everybody reading this article has played online poker
before, after all what would he/she be doing on an online poker site otherwise...
I suppose everybody has come across players in online poker rooms, whom, - after a while – he/she got a good read on. Meaning that he/she has pretty much figured out what a certain player's actions mean in terms of the pocket hand he's holding.
Getting a read on different players is of utmost importance in poker and especially in online poker. Since in the online version of the game, players aren't sitting face to face, getting an accurate read is a bit more difficult given the fact that the telltale gestures and clues are simply not there to guide after.
Having made the read, one needs to recognize what category the read opponent fits into and treat him accordingly in the proceedings.
It is a generally accepted fact in poker circles that players can be categorized based on two factors: the number of hands they actually play, and the way they bet when they do play a hand.
Based on the hands they get involved with players can be tight and loose. Tight players play very few hands, loose players play a lot more.
According to the way they bet, players can be passive or aggressive. Passive players are little more than calling stations, limping along all the time, aggressive players raise a lot and they go all in often too.
Based on the four factors presented above there are four types of poker players one can come across in online poker:
1) the tight-passive player.
This player's presence in the game is almost neglectable. He is so preoccupied to save and minimize his losses he willnot go in on anything then the best possible hands. His strength is this very thing: he is very hard to get any money out of, yet a skillful aggressive player can almost certainly steal all his blinds from him. For this guy the notion of defending his blinds doesn;t exist. He is also easily readable, and once the opposition knows he'll only limp in on the best possible hand they'll make sure they fold as soon as they see him limping. This'll cut the value of the pots he's likely to take to meager
amounts.
2)the tight aggressive player. This player won't mess around limping in on hands, though he's extremely tight, he'll go in aggresively whenever he's got something going in the pocket. This attitude might be considered prolific by some but on my peret I'd say it's not the least bit better than the tight passive's attitude. This player too can be read even easier than theprevious one and I ask you: what good is his aggressiveness going to do him when everyopne else folds up in a hurry.
3) the loose passive player. This guy is bound to give up a lot of money for nothing and is probably the least financially productive type of player. He'll lose his bankroll with the greatest ease and the fastest of all. He's going to risk a lot all the time, and he'll only cash in a few times. Many hands played all in a calling station manner.
4) the loose aggressive player. This fella is going to risk a lot but he'll also win a lot when he strikes. He'll also be able to steal the blinds from the tight and passive players.
I hope this classification will be helpful for you next time you hit an online poker room or an online casino. This'll give you an idea what you can do to counteract these players.
